During a time when the king forbade marriages to ensure that men would go to war, St. Valentine defied this edict by continuing to marry lovers in secret. When he was caught, the king ordered his execution on February 14th. Thus, Valentine's Day emerged as a day to commemorate St. Valentine. Interestingly, St. Valentine's skull can be seen at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. While this story lacks historical evidence, it makes for a beautiful tale. Happy Valentine's Day!
